Internet Radio goes quiet for a day

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

In protest at the Copyright Royalty Board’s decision to increase royalties payable by Internet Radio broadcasters by a massive amount and retroactively impose them back to June 2006, a very large proportion of the Internet’s radio stations have gone quiet. Live365, Pandora, DI.fm and ultimately, Shoutcast.com.

Although the quietness only lasted for 24 hours, it won’t be long before that quietness becomes permanent on or shortly after 15th July 2007.

The CRB and SoundExchange (the people responsible for collection of royalties) have effectively throttled the life out of independent internet broadcasters. The only conclusion I can reach is that the RIAA members have realised there is a growing interest in Internet Radio stations and if it continues to grow, their margins and control of the music industry will begin to falter. What better way to put paid to that than to increase royalties by so much that small internet broadcasters simply can’t afford to exist thereby leaving only the big boys, already owned and controlled by the RIAA, to continue playing the music only they want us to hear?

What annoys me most about this whole thing is that yet again the RIAA have manipulated the US Government and law courts to achieve control and the US Government let them do it. What can I do about it? Nothing because I don’t live in the US. If you’re a US resident reading this then please do something!

iFanboys, don’t iDrop your iPhone

…it might iSmash on the iFloor.

Perhaps it’s just me that thinks using optical quality glass in the production of the new Apple iPhone may lead to more than one dropping incident turning in to an expensive episode for some iFanboys but Apple have just announced some new upgrades/revisions will be incorporated in to their soon to be released handset. Optical quality glass to minimise scratching and a longer lasting battery. iWoo, I mean woo!

Stalinism to end when Tories in power?

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

My good god. Finally someone down in Whitehall actually has a clue!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Tory, I find their ilk thoroughly boring but save for any better alternative this guy seems to be talking sense. Unfortunately the article does mention that Bliar (intentionally mis-spelt) said very much the same thing in 1997 so let’s not get too excited.

Reclaiming our towns, villages and cities from the overbearing stalinist approach to government that Bliar and Brown have shown will surely be an election winning policy from the Tories. It’s making sure that they follow up on their policy promises that will be the hard part because, as the article itself mentions, once people get in to power they soon become complacent and are vehemently opposed to relinquishing control.

Prove that you’re not just talking the talk Cameron and you’ll have my vote at the next General Election.

Blair (BLiar) and Brown (Pants) tag-team Civil Liberties.

Monday, June 11th, 2007

I came across this amusing yet accurate cartoon drawing of the hand off of the job of Prime Minster from Blair (Bliar) and Brown (Pants) tag-teaming against Civil Liberties.

As they say, a picture paints a thousand words. This one paints millions. Times cartoonist Morland touching on a subject close to my heart perfectly.

Defrauded by… my own bank?

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Last Tuesday (29th May) I decided to open an ISA. While at work at went through the necessary forms online and shortly thereafter received a welcome email telling me that I had to send a cheque from my nominated bank account so that I could complete the signup process and my account becomes active. One problem, I don’t have a cheque book. I haven’t had one, or needed one, for eight years… until now of course.

So of course I get on the phone to my bank, tapping in my details via the keypad until I am put through to a guy. I simply said: “I need a cheque book to complete a sign-up for an ISA, could you send me one out please?”

The chap on the end of the phone seemed sensible enough and asked if the ISA was with them or someone else. “Someone else.” came the reply from me.

“Mind if I ask who?”

“I’d rather not say.”

“Oh right, okay then, well the cheque book is on its way and will take two to three days to arrive. Will you be making any large transactions on your account in the next few days?”
